Leeds Rhinos half-back Richie Myler made a scoring return to his home town club as Widnes Vikings were beaten 23-20 in the sixth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup.
Myler crossed for a try and landed a drop goal as the 13-time winners booked their place in the last eight but they were made to dig deep for the result as Widnes came close to pulling off a shock comeback.
Brian McDermott’s side led 11-4 at the break through tries from Tom Briscoe and Myler, the latter taking advantage of Stevie Ward's line break.
The Rhinos are in the hat for @TheChallengeCup Quarter Final but there were given an almighty scare by Widnes Vikings after early tries from Ashton Golding and Stevie Ward but its a win and we are in the draw on Sunday evening pic.twitter.com/FgnUPHA0G0— Leeds Rhinos (@leedsrhinos) May 11, 2018
Matty Whitley barged over from close range for the hosts but Myler's one-ponter ensured Leeds led by seven at half-time.
Ashton Golding and Stevie Ward extended Leeds' advantage but quickfire tries from Matt Whitley, Alex Gerrard and Charly Runciman almost turned the tables on the Rhinos.
Vikings full-back Aaron Heremaia dropped the ball on the line in a dramatic finish as Leeds clung on.
