Official Report / Commentary

Wakefield Trinity piled on the misery for Wigan Warriors as they inflicted a third consecutive comprehensive defeat on Shaun Wane's team.

After a resounding exit from the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup at the hands of Warrington Wolves, the Warriors produced another disappointing display to go down 32-16 at the Mobile Rocket Stadium.

Winger Ben Jones-Bishop scored two of Wakefield's five tries as the Yorkshire side leapfrogged champions Leeds Rhinos into sixth place in Betfred Super League while Wigan lost more ground on leaders St Helens.

Wigan were nilled on two of their three previous visits to Belle Vue and they looked to be heading the same way when they trailed 14-0 after 27 minutes.

The Warriors eventually ended a scoring drought of four minutes over three hours with Gabe Hamlin's first try in Super League but there was little else for the visiting fans to cheer.

Wigan coach Shaun Wane was able to take the positives from the result.

“We’re second in the comp,” he said. “We have to improve, I don’t like losing games and the players don’t like losing games but there is absolutely no panic at all.

“We need to dig ourselves out of it. We’re a strong bunch and we’ll sort it. We’ve got a decent turnaround now, so we’ll get some work in.”

Wakefield boss Chris Chester said: “I’m pleased for the lads because they’ve kept working hard and you could see how desperate they were for the two points, so I couldn’t be happier.

“Our ball control has been the best it’s been all year and I thought we asked a lot of questions with the ball. It was probably the best we’ve attacked."
